Northern Israel hit by rockets, says Hezbollah

Smoke rises skywards following an Israeli air raid on the town of Shamaa in southern Lebanon on Thursday, amid clashes between Israeli troops and Hezbollah fighters.

HEZBOLLAH said it had launched dozens of rockets targeting northern Israel, AFP reported on Thursday. The attack comes in retaliation to an Israeli strike in Beirut which killed a senior Hezbollah leader, four Syrian civilians and injured at least five Lebanese, according to the Lebanese health ministry.

Tensions in the region have risen following an alleged Hezbollah attack over the weekend that killed a dozen young people in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. Hezbollah has denied responsibility for the incident.

Israel’s military reported on Tuesday night that it had killed Fuad Shukr, Hezbollah’s most senior leader and the man it blamed for the attack.
