PAKISTANIS are expected to celebrate Eidul Fitr on March 31, according to a scientific analysis issued by the Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO).

In its latest report, SUPARCO assessed the visibility of the Shawwal crescent, predicting that the moon will likely be sighted on the evening of March 30 across the country.

The commission stated that the new moon for Shawwal 1446 Hijri will be born on March 29 at 3:58pm (Pakistan Standard Time). However, it is unlikely to be visible that evening due to its young age and low position in the sky.

By March 30 — coinciding with the 29th of Ramadan in Pakistan — the moon’s age will reach approximately 27 hours, making it easily visible to the naked eye after sunset. Additional astronomical factors, such as the moon’s 14-degree altitude and 2 per cent illumination, further support the likelihood of sighting.

Moon sighting also depends on atmospheric conditions, with clear skies improving visibility across most regions of Pakistan.

The report further noted that in Saudi Arabia, the chances of spotting the moon on March 29 are minimal due to its younger age and lower altitude. This suggests that the moon will likely be visible there on March 30 as well, aligning Eid celebrations in Pakistan and much of the Middle East on the same day — March 31.
